KENDALL.
  • (KENDALL. Addition-1640-1872.) Betsey R. Gage, wife of Oliver L. Kendall (b. Nov. 28, 1820), Sept. 6, 1859.(Gravestone.) March 1, 1830, Mary Kendall, of Burlington, belonging to this church [died], buried in Woburn.- July 2, 1831, Joseph Kendall, son of Obadiah [died].-Dea. Wyman's Account Book. "In a recent visit to the community of our people in Harvard, Mass., I collected some manuscripts containing some items of the Kendalls, formerly of Woburn. In the last century and the days of the Revolution of our government there lived in, the old town of Woburn one Nathan Kendall and his wife Sarah. They were prominent characters, moved is the best circles, were wealthy and able to live in the best style of the age. The family embraced parents, two sons, Nathan and Paul, and five daughters, Hannah, Sarah, Rebecca, Jane, and Eunice. About the year 1782 the religious faith, life, and principles of the Shakers were openly declared and preached in Woburn, all the members of this family embraced their doctrines. Soon after their embodiment with the Shakers, Jane died; and the funeral your grandmother in her girlhood attended -the record at which has been traditionally passed down in your family to the present generation--is probably the one reported to me. Somewhere about the year 1790. Nathan, the father, disposed of his farm and property in Woburn, and moved with his family to Mount Lebanon, N. Y., where a church was established on communistic principles, after the pattern of the first Christian apostolic church at Jerusalem. As other churches were formed of the sect in other places, ministers and officers were chosen for labors therein, and Hannah Kendall was called to the order of ministry presiding over the societies of Harvard and Shirley, Mass., and Sarah over the societies of Alfred and New Gloucester, Me. This family all lived and died in Christian fellowship, honoring their profession and being honored. I found nothing more of persons or of events that I think would interest you."..Extract from a Letter of Elder Abraham Perkins to Leonard Thompson, Esq., dated Enfield, N. H., March 21, 1892. In the possession of N. W. Eaton, Esq., of Woburn, there is a "Petition to the Selectmen of Woburn, Mass., to Exterminate a Meeting of Quakers." This document, in connection with the preoedag statement of facts in relation to the family of Nathan Kendall, is of great interest and value is showing the sentiment of certain members of the community towards the "Shakers," who we therein referred to as "Quakers." The petition reads as follows: - " Gentlemen: The subscribers being informed that there is a Number of People (strangers to us) under Pretence of Religion (as they say) convened at the House of Mr. Nathan Kendall in this Town, whose Conduct (if Reports are true) is contrary to the Laws of God & of this Commonwealth. " Therefore we earnestly Request you as Fathers of the Town, & as you Regard the peace, prosperity and happiness of the same, that you Forthwith take the most effectual (Reasonable) measure to exterminate those Persons, whom we suppose to be Strolers or Vagabonds. "To the Selectmen, Woburn, Dec. 5, 1781. [Signed] Samuel Dean, Joshua Jones, John Bruce, Jacob Eames, Timo. Brooks. Wm. Tay, Jons. Fox, Josiah Walker. Saml. Blodget, Barth. Richardson, Benjamin Edgell, Joseph Winn, Josiah Fowle, Jonathan Wright, Daniel Johnson, Jona. Kendall, Josiah Johnson, Nathan Richardson, Luke Richardson, Wm. Scott, William Abbott, Josiah Wright, Joseph Bruce, Saml. Wyman, Junr., David Blanchard, Shubael Johnson. For an account of the visit of Elder Abraham Perkins to Woburn, see the News of Woburn, Nov. 14, 1891. It is to be remembered that it was Leonard Thompson, Esq., who gave the name to the present Shakers' Glen, because situate on what was once the farm of the above Nathan Kendall.
